Harnessing Progesterone and Oxytocin: Natural Allies for Teen Health & Wellbeing

For teenage patients facing complex conditions like menorrhagia (heavy periods), eating disorders, or PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections), two (often-overlooked) hormones can play a powerful role in healing and regulation - progesterone and oxytocin.

Progesterone, often called the “calming hormone,” helps balance estrogen, reduce heavy bleeding, support mood stability, and promote restful sleep. In teens with menorrhagia or hormonal imbalances, supporting healthy progesterone levels—through lifestyle, nutrition, and in some cases, bioidentical supplementation—can ease symptoms and restore balance.

Oxytocin, known as the “bonding hormone,” is released through positive social connection, physical touch, and even activities like singing or petting a dog.

Oxytocin helps regulate the stress response, reduce inflammation, and promote a sense of safety—making it a powerful tool in managing anxiety, disordered eating behaviors, and the neuropsychiatric symptoms seen in PANDAS. By addressing root imbalances and activating the body’s natural healing pathways, we can support teens not just in symptom relief, but in building long-term resilience and emotional wellness.

If your teen is struggling, talk with your provider about integrative approaches that include hormonal and nervous system support.
